Archdeacon Wills 1784 #127, Andreas, of Joney Kneale als Lace, wife of John Kneale of Regaby, Andreas, died mid-February 1784:

‘In the name of God, amen. I Joney Kneale alias Lace the wife of John Kneale of Regaby in the parish of Andreas, being weak in body but of sound and perfect mind, memory and understanding (praised be to God for the same) and considering and calling to mind the uncertainty of this mortal life, do therefore make and publish this my last will and testament in manner following. First I commit my soul to God and my body to a Christian burial, hoping through the merits of my blessed Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ for a joyful resurrection, and a full and free pardon of all my sins. Secondly, I leave and bequeath to my son Thomas Kneale the sum of five shillings currency as legacy. Item, I leave and bequeath to my son William Kneale the sum of five shillings currency as legacy. Item, I leave and bequeath to my son John Kneale the sum of six pounds currency as legacy. Item, I leave and bequeath to my daughter Jane Kneale the sum of twenty pounds currency with a feather bed and bed clothes, with a little cow as legacy, and the same to be paid to her whenever she arrives at twenty one years of age or sooner if her father thinks it proper. Item, I leave and bequeath to my daughter Anne (the wife of John Kee) and my said daughter Jane Kneale all my shaped apparel equally between them as legacy. Lastly, I nominate, constitute and appoint my loving husband John Kneale whole and sole executor and residuary legatee of all the rest, residue and remainder of my goods, cattles, chattels and effects both real and personal whatsoever. And I do by tese presents annihilate, revoke and void all former wills or writings made to the contrary of this my only last will and testament. In testimony whereof I have hereunto caused m name and assured mark to be written and affixed my seal, this sixteenth day of February 1784. [sighed her mark] Joney Kneale alias Lace. Witnesses [signed] William Christian, [signed his mark] William Castile.

At a Consistory Court held at KK Michael the 8th March 1784. John Kneale the executor within named having departed this life, but previous thereto having duly made his last will and testament and appointed his son John Kneale executor, the said John Kneale is therefore sworn executor in Court in form of Law and hath give pledges for the payment of debts and legacies namely William Caistile one of the witnesses and James Clark junior of Lezayre.

I Thomas Kneale son of the within Testatrix Joney Kneale do hereby acknowledge to have received and to be fully paid the sum of five shillings currency a legacy bequeathed me by the last will and testament of my said mother Joney Kneale, and I do hereby acquit release exonerate and discharge the executor or the last will and testament of my said mother Joney Kneale of said legacy of five shillings. Witness my hand this 9th August 1787. [signed] Thomas Kneale.

I Jane Kneale daughter of the within Testatrix Joney Kneale do hereby acknowledge to have received the sum of twenty pounds currency with a feather bed and bed clothes and a little cow, and also the one half of my said mother Joney Kneale’s shaped apparel, the same being a legacy bequeathed me by the last will and testament of my said mother Joney Kneale and I do hereby acquit release exonerate & discharge the executor of the last will and testament of my said mother Joney Kneale of all the before mentioned articles. Witness my hand this 9th August 1787. [signed] Jane Kneale.

I John Kee husband of Ann Kneale daughter of the within Testatrix Joney Kneale do hereby acknowledge to have received the one half of the shaped apparel of said Joney Kneale the same being a legacy bequeathed my said wife by the last will and testament of her mother Joney Kneale, and I do release acquit exonerate and discharge the executor of the last will and testament of the said Joney Kneale of the one half of said Testatrix’s shaped apparel. Witness my hand this 9th August 1787. [signed] John Kee.

To the Reverend Charles Crebbin and William Clucas Vicar General of this Isle, The humble petition of John Kneale late of Douglas but at present at Regaby in the parish of Andreas; Sheweth, that your petitioner’s mother namely Joney Kneale of Regaby aforesaid on or about the middle of the month of February last departed this life but previous thereto duly made and published her last will and testament and after bequeathing several legacies appointed her loving husband namely John Kneale (the petitioner’s Father) sole executor thereof and also residuary legatee; That the said John Kneale also departed this life in a few days after his said wife’s decease but previous to such his decease duly made and published his last will and testament and after bequeathing in and thereby several legacies appointed your petitioner sole executor thereof and also residuary legatee; That your petitioner can make it appear to your Reverences that it would tend greatly to his advantage and also to the advantages of the several legatees under the said xxx wills, in case the petitioner can be granted probate and sworn executor of the said wills within as short time as can be convenient to our Reverences; And he therefore humbly prays that you Reverences will be pleased to order this petition to come on to be heard before you so soon as convenient and that the petitioner may be granted probate and execution of the said wills. And your petitioner shall pray &c.

Ordered that the matters of this petition do come and be heard at a Consistory Court to be holden at KK Michael Thursday the 18th instant. Whereof the next kin and all just persons are to have one notice & service. Given this 11th day March 1784. [signed] Charles Crebbin.

Pursuant to the Revd. Vicars General Charles Crebbin & William Clucas their order granted on the petition of John Kneale of Regaby in KK Andreas dated the 11th March 1884, I charged John Kee & Ann his wife, Thomas Kneale & Jane Kneale, I left charge for William Kneale by charge left with Thomas Kneale’s wife and xx defendants[?]. I also charged William Castill & John Kneale witnesses all of them to appear before your Reverences at a Consistory Court to be holden at KK Michael on Thursday the 18th Instant by ten of the Clock or when called to answer the suit of John Kneale. This I aver as witness my subscription this 15th March 1784. [signed] John Radcliffe, Sumner of KK Andreas.’
