There is an interesting set of papers (some copied from Lib Scacc) re murder of Catherine Corlett by her husband John, his subsequent execution and the disposal of his assets
Libb Scacc 1765 Whereas John Corlett of Castletown Mariner was at a Court of General Gaol delivery holden on the 9th day of October last, arraigned & condemmed for the murder of Catherine Corlet his late wife and had sentence of death pronounced against him and been since executed agreeable to the said sentence. And whereas their excellencies the Lord and Lady of this Island have (out of their great bounty and charity) signified to me by their letter bearing date the 8th day of February last past that it was their will and pleasure to remit unto the two children & orphans of the said malefactor all such penaltys and forfeitures which their excellencies were by the laws of the said Island entitled unto I do therefore in persuance of their excellencies directions signified to me by their sd letter release unto the said two children & orphans of the sd John Corlet all that their excellecies right interest and title to all such estate houses sum and sums of money, goods chatteles credits & effects which the said John Corlet was in his lifetime seized possessed of or intitled unto to hold the said houses money and effects unto the sd two children for ever by these presents and for which this shall be their sufficient power and warrant given under my hand at Castle Rushen this 13th day of May 1765 John Woods To all to whom these presents may come or concern
To the Honble John Wood Esq Governor of this Isle The humble petition of Eliz Curlett sheweth That your petitioners son Jno Curlett is now an unhappy convict under sentence of death in Castle Rushen within this Isle and that upon the day of the sd Jno Curlett's committment to Castle Rushen afore said which was upon the 5th day of May 1764 (all the sd Jno Curlett's effects being seized into the hands of the Attorney General for use & benefitt of the Lord & Lady of this Isle) the Constable and Porter of Castle Rushin aforesaid who are both publick officers under the Lord & Lady of this Isle did apply to your petr to supply the sd Jno Curlett with diet after the rate of three shillings and six pence manks currency per week; & whatever else he might stand in need of for the support of life during the sd John Curletts confinement at a reasonable price ; She the sd petitioner upon the faith of the sd constable & porter of Castle Rushin, and in tender compassion to her unhappy son, did according to the request of the sd constable & porter of Castle Rushin, supply him the sd Jno Curlett with diet & other necessarys from the 5th of May aforesaid to the day of the date hereof at the rates as by her account hereunto annexed will appear, and which she hopes & believes will appear a very moderate & reasonable charge. And as your Petr is old & infirm & greatly reduced by her exceeding great distress and having consum'd what she has by her industry & hard labours spared for the support of her old age) in the support of her unhappy son, and unable to procure a subsistence for herself. She therefore humbly prays that your honour in your wonted goodness commiserating her very great distress will order the proper officer to discharge & pay unto your said petitioner the ballance of your sd petitioner's account, or order her such redress as your Honour's great clemency and justice shall seem meet; and your petitioer as in duty bound shall ever pray for your Honours welfare & happyness Castletown Feb 15th 1765
At a Consistory Court holden at Kk Michael Decr 12 1765 The within generous release of the goods & effects of John Corlet who lately suffered an ignominious death is upon the motion of John Taubman & Richd Crellin sepervisors & Gaurdians of Willm & Eliz Corlet received upon the Registry of this court ; and in order that the sd goods may be forthcoming for sd orphans they the sd John Taubman & Richd Crellin are now sworn to bring to the registry a perfect inventory of the same, as also for the payment of sd Corlets just debts to which ends & for forthcoming of the sd orphans goods they have given pledges according to law namely John Quayle of Castletown cooper & Wm Clucas of Trinity Rushen Ro Radcliffe Maths Curghey Solv 12d 1765 Dec 12 John Quillin in behalf of Wm & Hen Gaitskill claim £40 0 0 John Quillin in behalf of Wm Leece claims £40 0 0 1766 Mar 21 Dominique Lamothe claims £2 0 0 July 24 John Callin claims £4 0 0
