Archdeacon Wills 1763 #36, Braddan, of John Hampton:

‘In the name of God, Amen. The last will and testament of John Hampton of KK Braddan who departed this life 23rd March 1763, being in perfect mind and sound memory at the making thereof. First, he commended his soul to God who gave it, and his body to Christian burial. Secondly, he bequeathed as legacy to his son John Hampton the sum of three pounds and his brown coat, which said sum was to be left in his mother’s custody for him for better security sake. Thirdly, he bequeathed to his son Robert Hampton the like sum of three pounds and his black waistcoat as legacy, which said sum was likewise to be left in his mother’s custody for him also for better security sake. Fourthly, he bequeathed to his loving wife Ellinor Hampton als Bridson their brown riding horse as legacy. Fifthly, he bequeathed to his son William Hampton one sheep and lamb as legacy. Sixthly and lastly, he nominated and appointed his sons Thomas & Joseph Hampton and his daughter Catharine Hampton equally and jointly executors of all other his goods and effects, moveable or immoveable of what nature, kind or denomination soever. And debars or excludes all, any, or every person or persons whosoever that may at any time claim any right or title to any part or parts of his effects with six pence legacy or whatever the law may or can allow. The testator having some time ago covenanted with his aforementioned son William Hampton who agreed and promised to work for the above said testator, four weeks in each quarter, or sixteen weeks in every year for the space of sever years, in lieu of his dieting and lodging for some time, and having no other memorial for conviction, desires such agreement to be considered. In case of necessity, which said agreement he affirms to have fulfilled on his part, but his son the other party not to have done likewise. Witnesses: William Cubbon, Henry Carran.

At a Chapter Court holden at KK Braddan 14th June 1763, the executors are sworn in court in form of law and content the tuition of the children under age shall be committed to their mother the widow, together with the legacies bequeathed to John & Robert Hampton of three pounds each for the forthcoming of which the widow hath given pledges to Thomas Curghey & William Cubbon both of KK Braddan, and the executors are sworn supervisors to the children underage as also for the payment of debts and legacies and have given pledges namely William Cubbon and Henry Carran the witnesses of the will. May 7th, 1770, I Robert Hampton do hereby declare to the Registry and acknowledge to have received from the hands of Thomas & Joseph Hampton & William Cretney husband of Catharine Hampton the full and just sum of three pounds and a black waistcoat as legacy bequeathed me by my father John Hampton, do hereby release and discharge the said executors their heirs and assigns of said legacy as witness my hand the day and date above written.
