In the name of God, amen. I Elizabeth Martin of Castletown in the Isle of Man, widow, being sick and weak in body but of sound mind and memory, do make and declare this to be my last will and testament in manner and form following. First, I commit my soul to God and my body to Christian burial, hoping for mercy through the merits of my blessed Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and a glorious resurrection. And I desire that my executor hereafter nominated may see me decently and handsomely buried with my dear deceased husband Richard Martin Esquire and in his grave. And as to my worldly substance, I dispose thereof as follows. I give and bequeath unto Margret Quayle daughter to the Comptroller the sum of two hundred pounds which is in her fathers hands of my deceased sisters money. I give and bequeath unto my cousin Elizabeth Kissage of Douglas the sum of one hundred pounds on condition that neither her nor her heirs shall molest or disturb or lay claim to my part of houses and lands in Ballalough against my executors hereafter appointed upon pain of forfeiting the said legacy. I leave my two cousins Isabel Nelson and Margery Quayle fifty pounds apiece. I leave to Miss Jane Lowthey [or Lowther] my sirrutore[?] with all my shaped clothes and twenty pounds. And to Mrs. Esther Maddrell twelve guineas. To Mr. Receiver Christian five guineas. To Deemster John Taubman ten pounds. To my two godsons the sons of Matthew Taubman & Henry Corrin ten pounds each. To Alice Ledwick the use of a room over the shop near Castletown Cross during her life if she removes from where she is. Item, I give and bequeath unto the poor of Castletown and parish of KK Arbory the sum of one hundred pounds equally and the same to be laid out to interest for their use by the vicars and church wardens of each parish conjointly with my executor hereafter mentioned and his heirs, and the said interest to be equally paid to the said poor of each place yearly at Christmas and distributed at the discretion of the said respective vicars. I give and bequeath unto the younger child or children of my brother in law Sir[?] Roger Martin the sum of six hundred pounds with all arrears of interest which said sum and interest are in his own hands and the same to be in lieu as to full satisfaction of all manner of demands on my executor whatsoever; and if no younger children be at the time of my decease then same to go to the eldest. I give devise and bequeath unto John Quayle Comptroller of this Isle all my lands and houses in Ballalough near Castletown, and in and about the said town, and do hereby nominate, constitute and appoint him the said John Quayle to be my sole executor of this my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 11th day of July 1752. Item, I leave to the said Sir Roger Martins younger children in manner aforesaid all arrears of rent of my concerns at Canterbury which shall be due at the time of my decease. Item, I leave towards the building of KK Arbory Church the sum of one hundred pounds to be put out to interest for that purpose. And the sum of fifty towards a charity school at Castletown when that charitable work shall be undertaken and to be put out to interest also. At Castletown November 15th, 1752, Mr. William Christian Receiver General of this Isle, Mr. Robert Maddrell and Alice Ledwick the subscribing witnesses to the within will have voluntarily relinquished their pretentions to the several and respective legacies therein mentioned and bequeathed unto them, and have deposed upon the Holy Evangelists that Mrs. Elizabeth Martin the Testatrix being of sound mind and memory did on the day and year first within written sign and declare and publish the before going writing to be her last will and testament and that the name Eliz. Martin subscribed thereto is the proper hand writing of her the said Testatrix and that at her desire they subscribed the same as witnesses thereunto. At a Consistory Court holden at Ballavagher in KK Patrick December 14th, 1752, the worshipful John Quayle Esquire the executor named in the within will, is sworn in Court in form of Law, who is to exhibit an inventory of the effects of the deceased when thereunto required, and hath given pledges for payment of debts and legacies, namely Captain Thomas Radcliffe and the Revd. Robert Christian. Probatum est, [signed] Robert Radcliffe, Matthias Curghey. I acknowledge to have received from John Quayle Esquire, executor of Mrs. Martin fifty five pounds thirteen shillings British xxx as per my receipt on her account 14 December 1752. To the Revd Mr. Robert Radcliffe & Mr. Matthias Curghey Vicar Generals of this Isle, the humble Petition of Henry Corrin in behalf of his son Thomas Corrin, Sheweth, that your Petitioners son having a legacy of ten pounds left him by Mrs. Elizabeth Martin deceased, which said legacy lies in the hands of the worshipful John Quayle comptroller, and the said Thomas Corrin having occasion for the said ten pounds to put out at interest that so much may arise towards his learning; he therefore humbly begs your Reverences would grant an order to receive the same which he as duty bound will pray etc.
At a Consistory Court at Castletown February 12, 1756, the Petitioner upon applying to the worshipful John Quayle Comptroller will be paid this legacy devised to his son Thomas Corrin, and said Henry Corrins acquitance to said John Quayle to be a sufficient discharge; and for the forthcoming of said ten pounds to said Thomas Corrin when he arrives to lawful years, or to his lawful representatives. The said Henry Corrin has given pledges in form of Law namely Mr. Robert Quayle & Thomas Taubman senior, both of Castletown. This to be annexed to the will of Elizabeth Martin.
