"KK Andrews 1725: This is affirmed to be the last will and testament of Cathrine Rafcliff als Sayle, who departed this life about the 23 January 1725, and was in perfect mind and memory at the making of it. First, she committed her soul to God and her body to Christian burial. Item, she left to her only Child Charles Ratcliff twenty pounds with an heifer to continue in his fathers hands on half the increase during his minority. And if her said son Charles would die under age, then the third part of his goods was to return to her husband and the rest to fall to whom it was due. Item, she left to Thomas Ratcliffe the heir a young heifer, with a sheep and yearling, that he may look after and take care of the sheep belonging to her said son Charles. To her niece Cathrine Sayle a petticoat & two suits of linen. To her niece Mary Woods two coifs. To Katy Ratcliffe daughter of Thomas two coifs. To Cath. Garret als Cowle a green apron with five coifs. To the witnesses 12 pence each. Lastly she constituted and appointed her loving husband sole and lawful Executor of her goods moveable and immoveable. She left her brother John Sayle & Cath Garret als Cowle overseers of her said son Charles and goods, which are to remain and continue in her husbands hands. (Cath: Cowle declares that the Testatrix left the next day a lamb to her brother John Sayle.) And that her will was made to prevent law suits and disturbance from Harry Woods. Witnesses: Thomas Killip, Cath: Garret als Cowle. The Executor sworn with the overseers in form of Law. The goods and child in the fathers hands who hath given ledges John Martin & Tho: Ratcliff the heir. February 6th, 1743, Charles Radcliffe came this day to the Registry and acknowledged to have received from his father William Radcliffe the sum of twenty pounds bequeathed unto him by his mother Cath: Radcliffe and does hereby acquit and discharge his said father and his Executors forever for the same. Before me Ro: Radcliffe Registrar. Memorandum: That his mothers will Catharine Radcliffe als Sayle is to be crossed for the sum of 20 pounds, departed in 1725; & his grandfathers will to be crossed for the sum of 6 pounds settled upon him by both his father & grandfather who departed in 1723, both of KK Andrews, & to bring a copy to their being crossed."
