Brian Lawson's Marriage Contracts

Yes, it is because Articles of Marriage are often so difficult to access when living overseas that Brian's final database was such a good idea.

For those who don't know, marriage contracts are sometimes found on wills films, when used in place of a will, but the majority are available only in the Manx Museum library because they have not been filmed.

I have found that they are an excellent source for identifying who the mother was. The mothers were often left out of early baptisms, and wills pre-1700 are usually recorded under their maiden names which makes them almost impossible to find if the marriage is missing - like in Andreas where there is a gap in the parish register from 1685 to 1704 (except for two), and in Lonan where they didn't start until 1718.

The indexes are available on LDS films:
Index of southside deed sales 1595-1847 FHL Film 0106684
Index of northside deed sales 1608-1847 FHL Film 0106685
Index of Castletown (includes all parishes) deed sales 1780-1847 FHL Film 0106686
