In my continuing trawl through Kirk Michael parish registers (film 0106737) I came across the following entries:
1768 Margt daur of James Sampson, killed by the Water Wheel of the Flax Mill, Oct 15
and almost exactly a year later -
1769 George son of James Sampson, killed by the Cog Wheel of the Flax Mill, Oct 25
There is no connection, as far as I know, with any of the families I am looking into, but I am struck by the awfulness of such a collection of coincidences. Does anyone know anything about the flax mill - for example, if it was owned/run by James Sampson? Would October be a busy time in the flax milling calendar? Whereabouts in Michael was this mill likely to be? I was just wondering what could account for two such disasters in one family.
