On this page is a list of surnames people have already done look-ups on. On it I found John Tobin (1) & Anabelle Butler, their children Samuel Tobin and his wife Mary Vokes & John Tobin (2) and his wife Barbara Wall. Some of the information is not correct however. They have John (2) listed as married to a Mary Stanwood in Massachusetts. Since I live in Vermont I am close enough to check that out, which I did. There are no records of John in Ma.
Germany unfortunalty does not have a web page with genealogy content. Most of their records are still kept in the old books. They are just beginning to transfer them to computer. I wrote to Mr. Wolfgang Meyer who works at the parish-register for the community of Remigius church in Dortmund. He checked his books and found John Tobin (2) 28 Nov 1694 Evangelisch, Mengede, Westfalen, Preussen. The father’s first name was not listed. Only the last name Tobin in a possessive form meaning the father’s name was the same as the child’s. John’s (2) parents were listed as from Deininghausen, Prussia. John (1) had twin girls Catherine & Charlotte B: 15 Nov 1707 in Saint Germain En Laye, France. I have copies of both of their birth & death records (they died 27 Nov 1707).
On the twins records the godfather for Charlotte is Christophe Nugent, brigadier of the regiment of Nugent (also known as the wild geese). So this tells me that at some point John was in Ireland or England. They ended up in France due to the exile of Ireland. From France they went to Isle of Man where John & Samuel where Born. I also have a copy of John’s (1) military records since Charlotte’s birth records lists John (1) as captain of the Calvary of the Irish regiment. I speak moderate French but I am having a difficult time translating it since it was hand written in old script & some of the words are difficult to make out.
So at the moment I am stuck on the Isle of Man part of the family. I wish I lived closer I would visit the historical library there. If you or anyone else were interested in a copy of the records mentioned above I would be glad to email them. I do not have any where on line to post them at the moment.
