Re: MI in Braddan
In Response To: Re: MI in Braddan ()

It would be great to have these John Gellings sorted out.

The one that interests me the most is the John Gelling bp 29 Jul 1718 Onchan, 3rd son and 4th child of John GELLING and Mary CORTEEN who married 23 Jun 1711 Onchan. My computer tells me he is my "4th great-granduncle". He is one of three "uncles on their father's side", with Wm Cooilleish and Dan'l Mylehreest", for the children of David Gelling of Barroose 1778 (my ancestor and John's brother), so I know he lived at least that long.

I have a note that there is an MI in Kirk Onchan Churchyard for "1783 John Gelling, of Douglas, died February 6th age 65", which is perfect for age and is also directly above his sister Mary Mylchreest and family on the MI list. The nearest burial entry that I know of is at Onchan "1784 John Gelling from Douglas Jan 24th", and there is a 1784 Onchan will which (according to my notes) mentions sons John and Thomas, daughters Catherine and Mary, "their mother now dead". The dates for the MI and burial don't quite align, so either there's a mistake or they are different people.

I also don't know if this is the John who married Catherine KILLEY in 1739 Braddan, but it seems like a good match. I've counted 12 children for this couple (including names that match all 4 on the 1784 will), though it's hard to separate them from the children of John GELLING (of Camork) and Catherine KELLY (no marriage found but would be ca 1728), by whom I've counted 8 children. Both couples had a John (as did every Gelling it seems). My notes have a burial in Onchan: "1765 John son of John Gellin of Douglas May 25th Smallpox", which might fit in here somewhere.

Onchan burial 1770 Catharine Gelling als Killey from Douglas Aug 14th. There is apparently an Episcopal deed 1770(2) Braddan & Douglas for Catherine KILLEY als GELLING that I haven't seen. The 1770(3) Braddan Episcopal will for Catherine Gelling is another Catherine (als Christian, second wife (of 3) of Charles Gelling, another son of John G & Mary Cotteen). I have this will, but have just realized I haven't transcribed it for Brian Lawson's site which I must do.

I don't know anything about the later John Gelling and Catherine Killey.

I wish we had a working file somewhere, where we could stash all the bits and pieces on a name, and then could work out the jigsaw puzzle as a group. My jigsaw puzzle doesn't have enough pieces in it by itself to do anything meaningful.
