Re: MI in Braddan
In Response To: Re: MI in Braddan ()

Donna, below is an extraction from the first page of the will I have obtained (my transcription so there maybe some words which are incorrect).

BRADDAN
To the Right Reverend Father in God, George, by Divine Permission, Lord Bishop of Sodor and Mann
The humble Petition of Thomas GELLING of the Parish of Marown

That about one month ago John GELLING of the Parish of Braddan yr. Petrs. Father departed this life and previous thereto made his last will and Testament in due form of Law and appointed yr. Petr. Executor of the said will.
Yr. Petr. humbly begs leave to state to Your Lordship that one of the witnesses of the said will is far advanced in years, nearly eighty years old, and in consequence thereof he cannot travel to Ramsey to ???? Court to establish the said will.
Wherefore yr. Petitioner prays that in consequence of the said proceedings your Lordship may be pleased to order and direct the Reverend Vicar General Stephen to grant a probate to the said will and to establish the same according to Law, in his own Court in Douglas, as the goods and effects belonging to the said estate are in a perishing condition and yr. Petr. Will pray to the Rev. Mr. Vicar General Stephen is hereby authorised (on account of the age of one of the witnesses of the within mentioned will) to receive the said will and grant Probate thereon according to Law – Given at Douglas this 1stt July 1822.
G. St ????

Further on it goes.....

I, John GELLING of Ballacaine in the Parish of Kirk Braddan, Senior, being at present in sound mind, memory and perfect understanding do make and constitute this to be my last Will and Testament in manner following:
I commit my soul to almighty God and my body to Christian burial.
I devise and bequeath to my son, John GELLING the sum of Three pounds British
I devise and bequeath to my son William GELLING the sum of Five pounds British
I devise and bequeath to my daughter, Jane GELLING the sum of Sixty pounds British, one cow, one feather bed and bedding, one chaff bed and bedding, with two bedsteads, one half of the crop of corn and potatoes, one heifer and the whole of the household furniture of every description whatsoever.
I devise and bequeath unto my daughter Ann, wife of James TURNER, the sum of Eight pounds British.
I nominate, constitute and appoint my son, Thomas GELLING, whole and sole Executor and Residuary Legatee of the rest of my goods, moveable and immoveable, be the same of what denomination soever, and this I publish declare and pronounce to be my last Will and Testament as witness my subscription this the 18th day of August 1821.

Hope this helps.

Many thanks
