Re: Death Info
In Response To: Re: Death Info ()

Dear MAry,

Thank you for your three responses and your time. I greatly appreciate it. Your help, and the help of Barbara and Sandra, are really helping me to better understand little Ethel.

The grave number differs between the "burial index" and the "memorial inscription index." Do you think this is just an error in transcription or something else? Also, the reference to her age as 17-18 months at date of death is of concern to me. I have her original birth certificate indicating birth in Barrow on 11-11-1907. Burial was in March 1908, a period of only 5 months. I guess I need to get a death certificate on her.

The "burial index" also indicates her residence as Douglas. It is my understanding that she died in Barrow (that is what is indicated on the 1909 death registration). Her mother and father were from Douglas and I believe they were living in Barrow for work reasons. Perhaps the reference to Ethel's residence as Douglas is incorrect. I guess it might be possible that she was in Douglas on a visit and the fire was in Douglas????

Ethel's father, William Kennaugh, was born in Douglas in 1879 and died at age 38 in Birkenhead, England. Don't know what he was doing there....probably work. (I'm assuming I have the right William Kennaugh...at least the "pieces fit") He died in March 1913 and was buried March 1913 at Kirk Braddan. I think he is buried at the same location as Ethel. He might be in another grave number.

If we have the right Ethel ( I'm almost certain we do but......) then perhaps I can find information on the fire and what happened to her. My father (Ethel's brother) never would discuss details but he was only 3 at her death and he probably knew little because Amy, their mother, never talked of it. What a tragedy.

Thank you so very much.

Kindest regards,
William Kennaugh
