Recomended reading, and part of one's personal reference library.
Although there are stories, explanations, prints, your William Cubbon is only in the list of Convicts sentencedto transportation in the Isle of Man 1816-1871, compiled by Patricia Power from an original list by the late Ean Convery with additional information by Hampton Creer,
"The 9191/11/ references are Government Letter Books (these sometimes lag behind events: major discrepancies are noted). Most detailled reports are generally in the Manx Sun, available on microfilm."
You appear to have most of that which is indexed, apart from the sentence was Life reduced to 10 years. The two references are 9191/11/5/337 and 9191/11/5/276. under NSW Hashemy there is in brackets: Commendation. I don't know what that means.
I hope this will be useful for further research.
I found a Daniel Daugherty in this book, searched it on an Australian Website, found by chance, and got a good descripton of him, even eye colour, and learned that when freed he stayed in Oz and married and had a family. Just haven't yet found where he sits in the tree! (Well in honesty, haven't exactly looked.) Then I realised that this period was when my gr gr grandfather was a policeman in the island, and a well thought of one, too. A documented story tells of his arresting a sheep stealer just before he sailed, and the thief was jailed. Now I have noticed the dates I am curious as to whether any of his arrests ended in transportation. (One for you George Callow?). I have not been researching for several years, but have now remembered how one question and answer can lead to dozens more! Thank you for firing up my interest again.
It is interesting to learn about the past. I have had this book since it came out, and never noticced Ean's contribution. I worked with him from 2002 until his retirement, and sadly his recent passing too soon after his retirement. This is when you realise how little one knows about the living.
