They will have heard what happened in Ireland when the churches who obeyed the order to hand over their registers (mainly Church of Ireland) saw over half the volumes destroyed during the 1922 Civil War, when used as ballast as the PRO at the Four Courts was burned. Whereas the registers from the mainly Catholic churches which weren't handed over were saved.
