Re: GELLING / FARAGHER / LEWIN / KELLY Lonan

Hi Eric,

I think you are right, although I didn't look at the Braddan parish reg for John James Lewin. The IGI has John James Lewin bapt 26 Jan 1851 Braddan, son of James Lewin & Elizth Kewley, and censuses have him b. Braddan c.1851.
In the 1901 census Lonan Minorca, John J Lewin ag. 50, Lead Ore Miner b. Braddan is with wife Jemima 47 b. Lonan, and daur Annie 13 b. Lonan.
In 1891 Lonan at 7 Crot-e-Quill, John Lewin 40, General laborer b. Braddan, with wife Jemima 37, Thomas Gelling son 11 scholar, and Annie Lewin daur aged 3, all b. Lonan.

It is possible that her residence "Lilac Cottage, Minorca, Laxey", given in Jemima's will, was where she had lived as a widow with her father and stepmother and her son Thomas Gelling, before her marriage to John J Lewin. Her father John Corkill was recorded in censuses from 1871 onwards at Minorca Hill, Laxey, Lonan, where he stayed until his death in 1894. His second wife moved to Ramsey to live with Jemima's sister, so after her father's death Jemima and family may have returned to the Minorca house where Jemima was living in 1871 and 1881.
- It would be nice to find an exact address for "Lilac Cottage" on Minorca Hill.
