GELLING / FARAGHER / LEWIN / KELLY Lonan

I noticed that a few people are looking for GELLING and KELLY in Lonan, and the following information might tie up some loose ends for someone. I have written about them before, but it was several years ago.

Jemima CORKILL bapt.12 March 1854 Lonan, married [1] 27 Apr 1878 Lonan, Thomas GELLING of Glen Roy, who died in a mining accident on Nov.15th 1880, aged 27 yrs [son of Joseph Gelling & Ann Faragher].
Jemima married [2] 6 Feb 1883 Lonan, John James LEWIN of Minorca, Laxey, who died August 5th 1920 aged 69 years.
Her children were: Thomas Edward GELLING b.27 Dec. 1879 Lonan, d.1940, married 1906 Elizabeth Mary GAWNE.
John James LEWIN b.20 Feb 1884 Lonan died 27 Aug 1885 aged 1 1/2 of measles.
Jemima Anne [Annie] LEWIN b.27 Aug.1887 Lonan, married Philip Edward KELLY 22 July 1908.

Jemima's second husband John James Lewin died 5 Aug. 1920, and she died 5 June 1936 "of Lilac Cottage, Minorca, Laxey". Thomas E Gelling was then of 12 Hope St. Douglas, and her daughter Jemima Ann Kelly [nee Lewin - known as Annie] was of 524 Speer St., Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania USA - with "grandchild Mona Kelly". Also at Lilac Cottage were Robert Benjamin Kelly and Margaret Ann Kelly. [In-laws?]

Son Thomas Edward Gelling, a draper, died 25 Feb. 1940 and his business partner petitioned the Court for the half share, which belonged to Thomas Gelling, of the 'Tailors Clothiers & Outfitters' at 59 Victoria St Douglas, called 'Bell & Gelling'. Witnesses called following the petition included Frederick GELLING who said that Thomas Edward Gelling's father Thomas had only one brother, called Joseph Gelling, and no sisters. Joseph predeceased Thomas, leaving four children of whom Frederick was one. The other three were John Joseph GELLING who was residing in the USA, Frank Winder GELLING, a bachelor, had died in the USA, and a daughter Emma Frances WALKER, a widow, was in Keighley, Yorks [in 1940].

Jemima’s daughter Jemima Ann LEWIN (Annie) married 22 Jul 1908 IOM Philip Edward KELLY of Lonan, when she was 20, and emigrated in Sept.1908 to North Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania, where two of Philip’s brothers were also living. Philip had emigrated in 1896 aged 20, baker.
The 1920 U.S. Census Pennsylvania North Belle Vernon, 176 Spear Street, has Philip Kelly, Head, 43, Coal Miner, Annie, Wife, 32, b. IOM, Mona, Dau, 10, b. Pennsylvania, Ruth M, Dau, 4/12, b.Pennsylvania.
Next door at 177 Spear Street was William Kelly, Head, 56, Wd, Arrived 1899, Gertrude, Dau, 26, Arrived 1899, b.England, Teacher, Public School.
And next door to him at 178 Spear Street was Joseph Kelly, Head, 45, Arrived 1896(?), Foreman, Coal Miner, Mary, Wife, 37, b.Pennsylvania, Gladys M, Dau, 17, b.Pennsylvania, Harold, Son, 13, b.Pennsylvania.
In the 1930 U.S. Census Pennsylvania North Belle Vernon 574 Spear Street: Phillip Killey, 53, First married at 31, Laborer, Steel Mill, Annie, Wife, 42, First married at 20, Mona, Dau, 20, b.Pennsylvania, Teacher, School.
532 Spear Street Joseph H Kelly, 53, b.IOM, First married at 26, Mill Worker, Steel Mill, Harriet, Wife, 40, b.Pennsylvania, First married at 18, Harold, Son, 23, b.Pennsylvania, Clerk, Steel Mill, Hunter Joseph Kelly, Adopted, 8, b.Pennsylvania, Neil, Phyllis L, Daughter, 8, b.Pennsylvania.

“ Mrs. Jemina Ann Kelly, 78, Confluence RD 2, died April 10 in the Spear Nursing Home, Markleysburg. She was born Aug. 27, 1887 in Laxey, Isle of Man. She is survived by her husband, Philip Edward Kelly; a daughter, Mrs. Mona Burnworth and a grandson, Edward, all of Confluence RD..." [Meyersdale Republican, April 14, 1966.]
“ Mona Burnworth, 72, Confluence RD 1, died Aug. 19, 1981, in the Spear Nursing Home, Markleysburg. She was born June 9, 1909, in Belle Vernon, daughter of the late Phillip E. and Jemima A. (Lewin) Kelly.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Benjamin Burnworth. She is survived by one son, Edward, Confluence..." [The Republic, August 27, 1981.]

Sue
