Re: Manx in Brooklyn, NY
In Response To: Manx to the US ()

Hi Bruce, you've touched on a subject I'm very concerned with. My Manx ancestors Charles Kaighin and his wife Margaret Christian arrived in Brooklyn in 1852 and remained there until about 1867 before moving to Cleveland. Margaret's mother was Elizabeth Patience Quayle, and I know she had some Quayle cousins that went to America. Among them, the line that leads to former US V.P. Dan Quayle. I have not done much work on the Quayle side, and since you have, do you know if your Quayle ancestors can tie in with Elizabeth Patience Quayle?

Charles Kaighin had Kaighin cousins in Brooklyn prior to his emigration, and I believe Margaret's brother Robert Christian was also there for a bit, but I've never checked to see if she also had Quayle cousins there as well.

The Kaighins all worked in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and the only reference to a residence was an 1853 city directory which shows a Charles Kaighin, shipwright, residing at "Washington, near Adams" which is near where the Brooklyn side support tower of the Brooklyn Bridge now stands.
