1. Yes, the name difficult to read in the 1850 census could be Richard. Note that he is not on the 1860 census.
2. 1840 census lists:
- name of head of household
- head count by free white/free colored/slave, by male/female, by age group. Also number of persons employed in one of 7 occupation groups, and name/age of pensions for Revolutionary or Military Services.
3. 1850 census lists:
- name of each person in household
- age
- sex
- color
- profession/occupation
- place of birth
- if married within "this year"
4. 1860 census lists:
- same as 1850 census
5. 1870 census lists:
- same as 1860 census
6. 1880 census lists:
same as 1870 with the addition of relationship (finally!), marital status expanded to identify single/married/divorced/widowed, and also includes the birth place of the household member's father and mother.
7. 1890 census - most of it has been lost due to fire. Work is in progress to list records that survived the fire, such as special veterans records, state censuses, city and county directories, etc.
8. 1900 census -
- name

- ownership of home
There are other categories listed from one census to another such as value of real estate owned, if blind, if deaf and dumb, and other physical and mental issues, etc.
7. Ellen/Eleanor's age is clearly written as 58 in the 1870 census. She did not marry within the year of the census.
8. In the 1900 census, while looking for something else, I ran across a Mary J Green, mother -
- (of head of household, Henry H, his age 46, dob Jan 1854, and his wife and 4 children, occupation teamster, place of birth Ohio, father's POB England, mother's place of birth Ohio)
- (Mary) age 78, widow, dob Jan 1822, mother of 9 children, 3 still living. Wonder is she is the widow of John Cavendish and remarried, eventually becoming the widow of Mr Green? Ages fit so well. They are living in Mifflin Township, Franklin County, Ohio. Census lists place of birth as Ohio, father's POB Virginia, mother's POB Connecticut. Unfortunate that we don't have the 1890 census.
I can not find her in the 1910 census.
