Following the Disaforesting Act of about this time much of what had been common land in the hills used by locals for upland summer grazing and peat cutting was enclosed and sold off by The Crown. This helped to make upland farms like Ballaskella unviable, and like many others in the area it was abandoned to become ruinous 'Tholtans'.
