17th centuray baptisms normally gave the names of both parents with a note stating "illegitimate". How the child was known in the community is a matter of speculation, but I suspect by the father's name.

During the 18th centuray there seems to be a gradual change to omitting the father's name.

During the 19th the PR and civil registration usually give only the mother's name. Census records show that frequently the child was subsequently kinown by the father's name.
