Yes they would probably bring a pretty penny. Like my Scottish ancestors who left the Australian Goldfilds in 1860 to go to Otago, New Zealand, where one of them had written (I have a copy of the letter) that he was digging up £100-00-00 of gold a week and when the water went down (it was at thigh level) he expected to find more.

Don't know where it went but 4 generations later I have not seen it.
