who was the historian ?
two refs to McHood exist on my page:

states that in 1735 No 4 seat in North Gallery of Douglas chapel a new seat To Philip Vinch and John Mchood at £1 0 0
I suspect that the association with Vinch (or Finch) means he was a merchant in Douglas at the time pre 1765 when smuggling was main business - many of these merchants post 1765 left quickly and some it was reported did go to America, as some had been involved with supplies for the slave trade they would have the necessary connections
Many of these merchants were Dublin based so it may well be worth looking at Irish records
