Re: james gelling parents
In Response To: Re: james gelling parents ()

James Gelling is in Liverpool in 1861:
RG9/2696 folio 39 page 13 #66 at Nor Ct 10 St Ann St (Islington):
James Gelling, Head Mar 43 Shoemaker b Isle of Man
Eliza Gelling, Wife Mar 39 b Ireland
James Gelling, son 12 Scholar b Liverpool
Catherine Gelling, dau 7 Scholar b Liverpool
Wm Gelling, son 3, b Liverpool
Eliza Gelling dau 1 b Liverpool
James Cairns, Boarder Unm 23 Shoemaker b Isle of Man

In 1871 he appears in Onchan on Market Street (#37 on schedule) as a Lodger Mar 50 Shoemaker b Douglas

A few pages later his wife appears, in Onchan at Quilliams Court (#77 on schedule)
Eliza Gelling Head Mar 47 Wash Woman, b Co Down Ireland
Wm Gelling Son 13 Scholar b Liverpool
John Gelling Son 9 Scholar b Liverpool

I looked but I couldn't find any other members of the family. They could have died or stayed in England, though I couldn't find them there either. It looks like James & Eliza must have ceased living together by 1871.

In 1881 at 7 Quilliams Court Onchan: (#61 on schedule)
James Gelling Head Mar 62 Shoemaker b Douglas
Ann Bengaff Boarder Mar 32 b Douglas

I could not find Eliza or any other members of the family.

In 1891 in Onchan, this might be him, but also could be somebody else:
James Gelling Lodger Widr 67 Lodger b IOM
I couldn't find anybody else of the family.

I don't have 1851, but based on the 1861 census he and Eliza would be in Liverpool then with one or two very young children.

The IGI has a marriage of James Gelling to Eliza Cropen 10 Apr 1846 at Braddan. You can also find the children, including a few others, on the IGI if you search under the parents names. They were christened in different parishes around Liverpool. Both birthdate and christening are listed and it seems they typically waited a couple of years before baptizing their kids.

I'm afraid that I can't identify who James Gelling belongs to. If he's in my family, it would have to go back a few generations before him, and I haven't yet traced all the lines of my earliest Gellings (from John & Mary married 1711 Onchan) downwards.

Hope this helps.
Eric
