Under the Act of Settlement (1702 in force 1704) all transfers of property (inc gifts which includes marriage contracts) had to be recorded - the index quoted by Sue merely lists the names of the grantors and grantees - you may be able to guess a marriage settlement but they are not indicated as such. They are actually the less useful record for property studies as they seldom give details of the property but they do usually name both sets of parents. However researching them is a very tedious process - the deeds are not on microfilm
Many earlier contracts were lodged for security with the court and thus found in the court records - they appear in wills as evidence of intention of the deceased
