I think his fathers career was all in Scotland apart from last posting to Chickens on IOM:

James Burnett entered service - 16 May 1849 aged 31 as assistant light keeper - NCL4/1/1 p. 193
16 May 1849 - Mull of Kintyre - p. 227
16 October 1852 - Bell Rock - p.213 - remained 3 years (NCL4/1/2 p. 131)
(Notes on Bell Rock, p.303 - ‘The light keepers have rations of provisions and 4d each per day for Tea, Sugar & Table necessaries while at the Rock & £4 to each for Gardens’ The salary for an assistant light keeper was £55/8/- (NCL4/1/2 p.303)
7 December 1855 - Buchanness, assistant for 4 ¼ years, salary £45. Promoted to Principal light keeper (p.305)
11 July 1860 - Cape Wrath - as Principal his salary was £55. A horse was allowed here (p.323)
16 March 1864 - Rhinns of Islay - received £55, a horse was kept there. Remained 3 years (p.336)
6 February 1867 - order sending him to Sumbrugh Head cancelled (p.69)
14 March 1867 - Monach (ibid) - 4 years there
8 February 1871 - Bell Rock - 5 years 6 months there
23 August 1876 - Montroseness - 1 year 9 months there
6 April 1878 - Chickens - 2 years 1 month there
1 July 1880 - Superannuated (NCL4/1/3 p. 32)
