Re: Marine Parade, Peel
In Response To: Marine Parade, Peel ()

Many thanks Frances and Brian for your trouble and help.

It is a shame that there is no census record of Cornelius in 1891, but I must accept that I suppose. I assume that he was at sea, or elsewhere, but untraced. They are a secretive, mysterious bunch.

I was making more of a mystery than perhaps existed, as I could not understand where his mother and two (of three) sisters were. However by 1891 his mother (Ann Skelley nee Moore) would have been 77, a venerable age for those days. I have not yet traced her death.

One of his three sisters (Jane Clague nee Skelly) died in 1883, a second Elizabeth, died unmarried in 1886 and the third, Ann Stewardson (nee Skelly, formerly Clucas), is traced - back to Duke Street around where the family lived for so long. Sadly she died soon after the census.

Sometime between 1881 and 1901 Cornelius's wife changed from Eleanor (nee Craine?) to Elizabeth (perhaps nee Quayle), and it is possible that there may not have been a Mrs Cornelius Skelly in 1891.

It seems that the apparent disappearance of the entire Skelly family is, upon examination, simply the deaths of some and the disappearance of Cornelius alone.

For now this looks to be a dead end, although I am remain puzzled as to why there is a 7 and 10 Marine parade without an 8 or 9, which appear by 1901, unless they correspond(ed) to the ends of other streets subsequently reclassified ? These little mysteries are such fun and intrigue.

Again many thanks for your help
