Thanks for your reply. It is possible that the characters are pound signs.
In the will in question, there are five legacies. I can decipher most of the will quite easily except at the edges and based, on the writing in the will, I read the legacies as follows:
1.)to her son Thomas (lower case "s" followed by upper case "S" above)
2.)to her son John ("6" above over lower case "s")
3.) to her son Richard ("6" directly over lower case "s" --there is an ink blob so I am even less sure)
4.) similar to 2.
5.) to her Daughter (lower case "s" followed by a period and then upper case "S" above).
It is possible that the lower case "s" is a version of a Pound sign and the upper case "S" is a "9". This would mean legacies of six or eight pounds.
This will have to do for now.
