At that period I think £ s d would be the norm the £ used as a prefix the s & d as suffices - guineas (used more as an affectation I think) would normally be spelled out; much older accounts might use a suffix lowercase letter L to indicate pounds.
Are you just seeing a rather ornate figure 5 or 6 (or similar)? though normally I have problems with deciphering words rather than figures.
