Re: Todd (aka,Kelly) Orphans - Mid 1880's

New information has come in the form of old letters from the Orphans Home at Bridge of Weir. The letter states: "With regard to yourself, there is an entry in our books that -
Sarah Kelly came here from the Isle of Man on 21st May 1895, after having been 10 years in that Home, and the age of this Sarah Kelly is put down as 18 on 24th February 1895."

Since the 'phrasiology' is different that what I am accustomed, would you interpret the reference to '18 on 24th February 1895' as Sarah's 18th birthday?!? She never knew her birthdate...we assumed 1877 because she knew she was released at age 18. That would be nice to know!

She obviously was orphaned a little earlier than I had thought...she was placed in the IOM (Douglas) Home abt 1885 at the age of 8. One other curious thing, on a birth certificate of one of her (Sarah's) children, she stated her birthplace was Scotland.

I gather she was placed in the IOM Home in abt 1885, sent to Bridge of Weir 10 years later in 1895, and from there on to Quarrier's Fairknowe Home, Brockville, Ontario, Canada, where she was indentured and released in 1895!

That is today's news!
