Going by the 1888 birth WH was 18 when he married and he had been in the army for about 4 years and being tall for that time he would have looked old enough to get married. Looking at where he went in the army, after marrying, he was in India from 1906 to 1908 then South Africa from 1908 to 1910. He then came home and was a civilian until brought back for WW1 in 1914.
