Thanks to you both for taking an interest in my Robert Kelly conumdrum. The bane of my life for the past 45 years ! Remember my grandfather was about three when his father Blind Robert died, so all we have are the oral tales his mother told him about his father. These have become mixed up over time. My 83 year old Uncle stated that Jane McGinn was a wet nurse to earn money after the death of her husband, Blind Robert. In fact the Wet Nurse was Blind Robert's mother Elizabeth,(for the Rowe family in Laxey). so you see how stories have an element of truth, but not 100 % ! In fact Jane became housekeeper to Mr Shipsides, and later married him in 1908. I suspect it was a bigamous marriage. So fact wise my family knew very little about Blind Robert, except that he had been blinded as a young man in the Mines. I still have a 102 year old (adopted) Auntie who keeps changing the mine's name. One day she states Snaefell, the next day Laxey. However a newspaper report, in the IOM Times, December 1879 stated that 'a grand firework display to take place on 8th January 1880 at Victoria Park Laxey, for the benefit of a young man who was recently deprived of his eyesight by an accident in the mines. (No name given in newspaper, but I believe this was Robert Kelly aged 19) On 17th Jan. the IOM Times reported that the firework display had taken place, but again no name given. Andrew Scarffe kindly provided me with that information in 2005. So I eventually found Robert (as Richard !) in Liverpool school in 1881 census, learning trade of basketmaking. My 102 year old auntie told me that 'The people of Laxey had a collection to send him away to train as a basket maker'. so again half-right.
She also said that, whilst waiting to be rescued after the accident he 'sang loudly for his mother' whatever that means. This auntie lived with his wife, Jane McGinn and was adopted by her daughter Alice Kelly, so has heard lots of tales. She is an original source.
Regarding him naming William Kelly on his wedding cert. William was his eldest male relative, his mother's brother, baptised 1812. Their father died 1860, same year as Blind Robert was born. All the children of Robert Kelly were named and left one shilling in their father's 1860 Will, written in 1852. I have searched in census forms for a male Mills living in the north of the island, in 1871 Robert Mills was a shoemaker in Ramsey, making him 16 when Blind Robert born in KM. Elizabeth his mother was 23.
In 1871 and 1881 she was in the house of Anna Maria Mitchell aged 28 in Marylebone London as 'Nurse' to family. So when did she develop a relationship with her son?
Also I cant find him named as Robert Kelly in 1871 in IOM Census, although there is a 12 year old (age fits) called John Kelly, a boarder, living in Lonan with John Callin, aged 30, and his wife Ellen, aged 36. This Ellen is sister to Elizabeth Kelly, Blind Robert's mother. She and John are in KM with baby Robert (Mills?) in 1861, at home of his grandmother, Catharine. Did they 'adopt' him and take him back to Lonan? Don't know. Is this yet another Census error regarding names, as the family have father John, their own son John James, aged 5, then John as a Boarder.

I really would like to solve all this before I leave this mortal toil !!!
Regarding the surname Kelly/Mills. It was my husband who first commented on it. unusual initial capital letter. then 'i' for 'e' but the double LL is a big plus in favour of Kelly. Personally I think Mills is a non-starter, as we know Elizabeth had an illeg. son of a few months old, called Robert, and she left him in KM with her recently widowed mother. In later Census returns Catharine describes herself as 'midwife of the village'.
The only other Robert Kelly christened that year in KM is mid child of a big family.
