At census time, a manxman living on the mainland might give his birthplace as just “Isle of Man”, or he might add his parish of birth. But instead, he could give the name of the town nearest to his actual birthplace.

So the Robert Henry Corkhill b 1856 (illegit son of Elizabeth Christian), if he were still alive and living on the mainland in 1911, could have validly given his birthplace as Castletown, IOM, given that his mother’s place of residence in the baptism register was Ballahott, and that he lived with his maternal grandmother nearby at Stockfield in 1861 and 1871. He could have said Ballasalla but Castletown , being well-known, was probably a better option.

I wouldn’t rule out this RHC as the one who married Maggie Joy just on the grounds of his stated birthplace.
