Hi Ricky.
That last sentence I wrote in my previous message was wrong, in that the John Corteen of Thallooqueen, who witnessed the Maughold marriage in 1760 was far more likely to have been John Corteen 1738-1815 (grandson of Gilbert) who married Cath Stole in 1763, and was recorded as dying at Thallooqueen, and as the owner in 1783 and 1787.
Which leaves John Corteen b.1690 son of Gilbert Corteen and Margaret Christian of Thallooqueen, Maughold, as a bit of a mystery, apart from marrying Jane COTTEAR on 6 May 1718, Maughold.
However it turns out that he can’t have been the John Corteen who had children in Ramsey with “Christian” (no surname given at their bapts), as has been given on some Corteen trees.
No marriage found.
The children of John Corteen and Christian were: Mary (bapt) 1722; John 1726; David 1730 (earlier David died inf.); Edward 1734: and Ann 1738 (died young). Son David 1730-1807 marr. Mary Cottier 1754 Lezayre and their David Corteen grandson (son of David Corteen 1755-1792 & Cath Curghey b.1755 Bride) was assumed to have married Sarah Shaw 1816 in Liverpool.
Father John Corteen died in 1759 and wife Christian Corteen died in 1770. In her will she mentioned her son David’s children and son Edward. John’s 1759 decree named “his four children namely John, David, Edwd & Mary Corteen” and “Hugh Martin husband of Mary”.
Thanks to Frances we now have the will of David Corteen who was buried in Maughold 26 Nov.1758 “of Ramsey”, and who was clearly the brother of this above John d.1759. In David’s will he leaves his houses and land in Lezayre to his brother John Corteen, and also mentions his nephews John’s son John Jnr, as well as his nephew David Corteen. His sister Margret Corteen was his execx.
Sister Margaret Corteen’s 1764 will also mentions her niece Hugh Martin’s wife, her sister Catharine, her nephew David Corteen, her nephew John Corteen, and his eldest son John, and eldest daughter Margt. (I think the scribe made an error and it should be eldest daughter Mary, who married Hugh Martin.)
Her nephew John Corteen was exec.
Hugh Martin & Mary Corteen married in Maughold 10 Nov 1750.
BUT although David Corteen d.1758 was clearly the brother of John Corteen d.1759 he can’t have been the son of Gilbert Corteen and Margaret Christian of Thallooqueen. In Gilbert’s 1701 will “he bequeathed to his eldest son William Corteen …. he bequeath to all ye rest of his children (to witt) Jon and [Ro]bert & Gilbert & Ewan and Margrett five pounds starling [a]piece.”
And his widow Margaret’s will “[who departed]... this life ye 23 of Octobr 1705. She bequeathed to her sone Ewan & Robert... To her sone John … To her sone Robert... To her sone Ewan ye [homes & fflax]... To her sone Robert . To Ewan... she beq[ueathed]... to her three sones viz. Ewan, Robt & John …Execs.. “
Gilbert in particular made it clear that he had named all his children – and there was no David. So David’s brother John can’t have been Gilbert Corteen of Thallooqueen’s son John b.1690!
The line of David Corteens came from Ramsey/Lezayre, but Lezayre parish registers didn’t start until 1696, and Ramsey’s much later. Constance Radcliffe writes that the family was in Ramsey for at least 300 years. The first wife of John Corteen, father of John (d.1759, above) was Mary Christian who left a 1670 will – no children.
Maughold registers have the bapts of two children of John Corteene: Kathe bapt 6 Jan 1680/81 and Margaret on 16 Dec.1683 – this could be Margaret who mentioned sister Cath and brother John’s children in her 1764 will.
CR also wrote in her book “Ramsey 1600-1800” that “in 1703 David Corteen, son of John, owned a small intack, and a small part of Ballure quarterland, both lying together at the top of Maughold Street (back of Cummal Mooar), the family was in residence in at least 1670, when the wills of his grandmother Alice Kneen, and his father’s first wife Mary Christian were proved. This first David was unmarried, and ‘the houses and backsides where they dwell’ were inherited in 1758 by his brother John, who died the following year, leaving sons David, John, and Edward. The property descended by the son David, a shoemaker, to his son James in 1807”.
I think this finally sorts out the David Corteens of Ramsey, and shows that they were not connected to Thallooqueen, Maughold, at that time.
