“I never did find a deed to show the first Corteen owner of Ballasholague, which is where I live. Robert is the first one to appear in Liber Assed about 1700. The first Corteen I have found was in a Composition book for 1594 but unfortunately I can't identify the land he was entered for”. Allan Terrett wrote “John Quartin d.1603 was most likely a descendant of Donald McCortein who was entered for Ballasholague 1511-1530”. (C.R. has Donald “McCostean” entered in 1511, explaining that J.J.Kneen gave Corteen & Costain as variants of each other.) Allan Terrett has John’s son and heir as Richard Quarteene of “Emell Lork”, d.8 July 1629, followed by his son Richard died 1637. “See entries 41, 47, 63, 74, in Maughold Composition Book for 1640s which seem to link Richard with Jon buried 2 Feb. 1687”. We know John Corteen d.1686/7 was the father of Gilbert d.1701/2 who inherited Thallooqueen, and of Thomas d.1701/2 whose son Robert appeared in Liber Assed as owner of Ballasholague in 1703.

In her book ‘A History of Kirk Maughold’, Constance Radcliffe wrote “In 1610, about the same time as Ewan Quartin was making his first appearance in Ballacorteen, William Quartin was entered for the third of the four Maughold Particles, Thallooqueen. Thus began an unbroken family ownership of one farm under one surname for 350 years, a record without parallel in Maughold. From the Manorial Roll we take the names of William and Richard Quarteene in the early seventeenth century. In 1643, John Cortene was entered, who, when he died in 1687, was followed by his son, Gilbert, a name much favoured in the early generations of the family....”.

I haven't looked at this family for a long time, and I think possibly you may have David in the wrong place. Jim Robbens has a full written Corteen pedigree - I'll ask him to help.
