Re: Corteen family of Liverpool
In Response To: Re: Corteen Family ()

Hi again Ricky,

I have been finding old messages and records to see where we got up to previously with David Cotton/Corteen of Liverpool and his possible Manx family.

At the time Jeanne wrote "I'm sure David Corteen and David Cotton are one and the same---------what are the odds of a David Corteen, Mariner and a David Cotton, Mariner, both with a wife Sarah living on Ray Street in Liverpool at that time; especially given that Corteen is a rather unusual name???
Then, of course, we have Catherine Corteen, 27, father David Corteen, Mariner marrying Samuel Wallace in 1852; making her birth date about 1825...."

This Liverpool David Corteen has been entered on Ancestry as being the son of John Corteen b.1690 and "Christian .....", and that John was the son of Gilbert Corteen & Margaret Christian from the Thallooqueen Maughold family. I believe that this is incorrect for Christian's husband, as are all the earlier generations given. John of the Thallooqueen family who was b.1690 married Jane COTTEAR on 6 May 1718.

There is no marriage in Maughold of John/Jon Corteen and "Christian ......" that I can find, although they had children baptised there: John 1726; David 1729 (buried after a few days); David 1730; Edward 1734. They were a Ramsey family.

See his will Ramsey June 13th 1759:
John Corteen departed this life on or about the 3rd day of
Febry last past Intestate. The Court having Intelligence thereof
hath Decreed his four children namely John, David, Edwd & Mary
Corteen joint Admnsrs of all his Goods & Chattles moveable &
immoveable whatsoever. Sd John, David & Edwd with Hugh Martin
husband of Mary are sworn in form of law & gave pledges namely
Hugh Black of Ramsey & Wm Kneale of Lezayre.

There are several wills for this family which I'll email to you.

Ramsey is a town partly in Maughold, and partly in Lezayre, although burials were often in Maughold.

So John Corteen of Ramsey (place of birth and date unknown) died in 1759, but John Corteen b.1690 of Thallooqueen, Maughold, witnessed this Maughold marriage in 1760:
Ewan Keruish / Anne Joughin marr. 5 Jul 1760
Witnesses John Kermeen Cooper & John Corteen of Tallooqueen
