Hello,
With much thanks to Diana Banks, I’m fortunate to have photos of the deed of sale of land between William & John Teare and John Callow dated 13 May 1826. (John Callow emigrated to and died in Ohio.) While it describes neighboring property owners in detail, I’m still trying to use maps, Thomas Tear’s 1888 memoir, Wood's Atlas, etc. to triangulate the exact spaces in Andreas – there were apparently 3 parcels of land sold.
The deed mentions that the land was in the quarterland of Balamore and that the parcels “were commonly known by the names of Creggan Raughe Guane and Gatt The Creggan Raughe and adjoins the King’s Highway on the North …”. In the 1925 Place Names by JJ Kneen, there is a mention of a “'Skaly of Ballamore's quarterland'(Ir. MacScalaighe.) v. Lhen Mooar” in Andreas. Additionally, Wood's Atlas shows a Ballamacskelly near The Lhen.
My guess is the properties were located in The Lhen – some on the King’s Highway (Coast Road?) and possible one next to the shore. (Thomas Tear recollects the properties to be a stones throw from the old schoolhouse and close to Blue Point.) Possibly near present-day Ballathona Farm and Lawson’s Croft. But where?!
I’d like to pose two questions to tap into the collective wisdom of the group.
1) Has anyone heard of Creggan Raughe Guane or Gatt The Creggan Raughe? I can’t find mention of either. Does my hypothesis seem reasonable?
2) Does anyone have 1:25 photos of the 1869 Ordnance Survey for the area around The Lhen? I’d like to coordinate the locations - given by 1:25 plot number - used by Thomas Kinrade in his recollection of 1890s The Lhen. (1:6 is too small). If not, I believe I can order through the Manx Library.
Thanks in advance. My goal, of course, is to one day visit the parcels!
