Re: Mary Ann Caley b 1853--for Sue

Hi Stephen

I'm intrigued.

No, I hadn’t looked at this puzzle since 2013. I spent some time yesterday reviewing the messages in this thread and then had a look at the parish register images which weren’t available in 2013. Here are my two best guesses for the identity of the great grandmother of George Harrison, viz Annie Thompson alias Caley ( b circa 1855 IOM --- possibly Ramsey area and probably not Port Erin, from census records):

*********
First---Mary Ann Caley b 1853, daughter of John Caley mariner and Isabella Corkill, as outlined in the messages above.

********
Second (if you can accept that someone born in 1853 at Ballaragh, Lonan, could, 48 years later when living in Liverpool, give her birthplace as Ramsey, IOM----perhaps the nearest biggish town to Ballaragh ?):

Name Mary Ann
Event Type Christening
Event Date 24 Apr 1853
Event Place Lonan, Isle of Man
Gender Female
Mother's Name Ann Wade

Image shows: Mary Ann, illegitimate daughter of Ann Wade, Ballarragh, servant (can’t read next word)

********
In 1851 at Ballaragh was this Caley family (farmer Philip Caley and Esther alias Kelly)

Name Age
Philip Caley 63
Esther Caley 52
James Caley 28
John Caley 25
Mary Caley 22
Elizabeth Caley 13

notes:
JC 25 unmarried farmer’s son b Lonan

***********
Name John Caley
Event Type Burial
Event Date 18 Apr 1853
Event Place Lonan, Isle of Man
Age 27
Birth Year (Estimated) 1826

notes:
Image shows abode near The Dhoon. There’s a note in the margin “courts 20th May”

********
Here’s the only IOM census entry for an Ann Caley b circa 1855 who appears in 1861 or 1871 whose father’s name could have been John (all the others weren’t named John):

1871
Maughold (Ballabeena ?)

Ancestry’s transcription:

Name Age
John Corkill 72
Jane Corkill 67
Ann Caley 14

notes:
AC 14 domestic servant b Lonan

No matching Ann Caley in 1861

*******
possible baptism for Ann Wade, mother of the illegitimate daughter born in 1853:

Name Ann Wade
Event Type Christening
Event Date 16 Jan 1831
Event Place Braddan, Isle of Man
Gender Female
Father's Name John Wade
Mother's Name Cathe Hampton

*******
This family was near Dhoon in 1841

Ancestry’s transcription:

Same family in 1851 at Ballaragh, Lonan (near Dhoon, Maughold) after Ann Wade b 1831 had left home:

1851

Ancestry’s transcription:

Can’t see an Ann Wade on the island who could be her so this is possibly Ann in Little Woolton, Lancs, 1851:

Ancestry’s transcription:

Name Age
George Bennion 67
Mary Bennion 67
Frances Elizabeth Bennion 26

Ann Wade 21

notes:

*******
Probable marriage of this Ann Wade:
Name John Cleator
Event Type Marriage
Event Date 12 Jul 1856
Event Place Braddan, Isle of Man
Gender Male
Marital Status Widowed
Father's Name John Cleator
Spouse's Name Anne Wade
Spouse's Gender Female
Spouse's Marital Status Single
Spouse's Father's Name John Wade

image shows:
JC/full age/widower/miner/Dhoon, Kk Maughold/father John Cleator, miner
AW/full age/spinster/Mount Rule, Braddan/father John Wade, miner.
Both signed with an x-mark.
witnesses: John Wade and James Killey.

********
Was this the burial of John Cleator’s first wife ?
Name Ann Cleaton
Event Type Burial
Event Date 22 Jun 1856
Event Place Lonan, Isle of Man
Age 31
Birth Year (Estimated) 1825

abode: Dhooin, Maughold ---- this is the same place as the abode of the John Cleator who married Ann Wade a few weeks later)
I think that this burial is Ann nee Quayle who was age 25 when she married John Cleator in 1850.

Comparing the children in the 1861 and 1871 households, it’s possible that the 1861 enumerator couldn’t read his rough notes and so in his neat copy wrote Thomas age 2 b Lonan instead of James W. I also wonder whether the Margaret age 7 in 1861 could have been Mary Ann Cleator b 1853 dau of John Cleator miner and Ann alias Quayle (who is likely to have been John Cleator’s first wife) or she could have been Mary Ann b 1853 illegit dau of Ann Wade.

************
I’d love to see the marriage details for James Thompson and Ann Caley to see whether Ann’s father John Caley’s occupation was mariner or farmer or something else altogether---perhaps simply “deceased”. But I’m not going to buy the certificate.

How does one discover the nature of the note “court 20th May” (1853 Lonan) in the margin of the entry in the burial register ? Could it be that Ann Wade had applied to the court to claim that John Caley was the father of her illegitimate child ? Note----this is pure speculation on my part.
