Many thanks, Frances & Averil
My “house of Cards” is trembling, however!
I am confident that William [2] d.1757 of Aridale was a direct ancestor of mine [via son Robert and onward], but his putative father William [1] presents a problem:
I don’t think that William b.1703 s/o William and Joney Cannell is the s/o William [1].
Several points do not seem to fit:
1) The sale of Aridale to William [1], brother-in-law of John Kewney was dated 1705-05-11, and the burial of Joney Garrett als Cannell was 1705-03-14. Thus the sale was before Joney’s death [Julian Calendar].
2) William [1] stated in 1719 [MC] and in his Will of 1744 that Ann was his eldest daughter and his other daughters were Joney & Margt. This was confirmed in his wife Margery als Kewney's Will of 1734. A reasonable assignment of the three daughters’ baptisms would be Ann 1700-03-05; Joney 1704-04-12; Margt 1707-06-22. Joney’s Will of 1751 names Ann [w/o Ewan Corlett – x refs MC 1719] and Margaret [w/o (Thos) Kewney].
These two points seem to rule out Joney Cannell as the w/o William [1] and m/o of William [2].
The marriage of Margery Kewney and William [1] Garrett has not emerged. Probably before 1696.
I prefer to assume that William [2] Garrett who died 1757 Aridale was an earlier son of William [1], possibly born ~1690-96, before William married Margery Kewney.
I am going to list William [1] Garrett as “Tentative” in my tree and try to dig deeper in the near future.
