Hi Averil,
Has any further progress been made re the above line?
A possible "house of cards" [ready to fall down in the slightest breeze!] is summarised below - numbers [1] to [4] are for clarity only:
William Garrett [1] d.1744 wife Marjery Kewney d.1734; md. ?[bef 1700] - 3 known daughters Ann 1700, Joney 1704, Margt 1707, plus perhaps son William [2] ? [poss 1703].
William [2] d.1757 Aridale; wife Mary Kewn d.1761; md 1725 - children Mary 1726-63 [Thos Kinread]; William [3] d.1794[ ? Joney Xtian?]; Isabel 1737- before 1757; Robert 1739-92 [Cath Caley]; Elizabeth 1745-1806 [m/o Isabel Quark b.1780 illeg]
William [3] d.1794 ?burial? wife ?Joney Christian [? d.1783? bd. Andreas?]; md.1770 Andreas - children William [4] 1771-1845, Esther 1775-1838 [she never married?]; John 1778-1846 [did the two brothers remain single as well?; they probably feature in the 1841 Census at Narradale - but only as Ag Labs - did William [4] or [3] sell the farm land?
My main interest is in 5xgt GF Robert Garrett [bptd 1739-09-09 Lezayre to Wm Garrett [2] / Mary Kewn.
William Garrett [2] d.1757 of Aridale; his wife Mary als Kewn d.1761 & both left Wills confirming the names of above children [except Isabel].
William [2]'s parents were possibly William Garrett [1] d.1744 of Brondell and Marjery Kewney/Kenney d.1734, whose brother John Kenney sold his part of Narradale to William Garrett [1] in 1705/7 [see previous entry 12/4/2014, 12:07].
William Garrett [1] and Margery Kewney had three daughters, but no mention of a William [2] in either of their Wills.
In 1719 the eldest daughter Ann was given half of father William's [1] holding in Narradale on her marriage to Ewan Corlett [Old Lez Bun 2 76 in mnb CD], and they both died at Narradale [Ewan 1765; Ann 1772].
It also seems that William Garrett [1] had another [main?] holding at Brondell/Broundell in Lezayre:
1740 Abbeylands Lezayre [mnb]
11 Narridall
1 quarter:
John Skillicorn (1742, o1748) 6s
Edm Gill 6s
Wm Cottier (m1747) 6s
Wm Carret Broundell and Ann his daughter & Ewan Curlet her husband (o1746*) 3s
Wm Garret 3s**
*consitent with Wm Garrett's [of Brondell] death in late 1744
** Finally there is an entry in mnb:
Lezayre NSS Oct 1735 Wm Garrett to Wm Garrett his son Gift
This may throw some light on the above!? - possibly William [2] was an illegitimate son of William [1] - or not named in the Wills because he was the heir? - or perhaps [cards falling everywhere!] - another Garrett family altogether!
Lezayre baptisms start 1696? - can't find a Wm Garrett s/o Wm until 1703 and eldest daughter Ann was b.1700.
Thus two William Garretts [2 & 3] of doubtful parentage in two generations!
Comments, Strong Breezes, Hurricanes most welcome!
