There's a number of English-born John McDonalds born around the same time as your John. With him being a coal miner I think he may have come from the north of England where there were coal mines. The north east in particular, including the counties of Durham and Northumberland, had both coal mines and lots of people called McDonald with them being not far from Scotland.
