most Manx married by licence (rather than banns) - a special licence needed if both parties married outside of their parish or wished to marry not in the parish church (eg there are some in Ardreas who married in the rectory house of if they wished to marry in a 'closed' season such as Lent or if they wished to marry very shortly after applying for the licence - the marriage reg often notes some additional info - the special licence cost more and was only issued by Bishop or a designated person.
