Some women were in Ballamona because they had had an illegitimate child or their parents did not approve of their lifestyle. These women were institutionalised after a few years and ended their days in the hospital. My father in law invited a couple of elderly ladies from the hospital for a meal in the late 1950s They did not seem to have anything wrong with them but they were definitely institutionalised - so sad.
