Do you think the condition recorded was the vicar's humour? I thought he took the question literally when the new forms arrived in 1839, and from at least 1840 wrote "in tolerable circumstances"; "a seafaring man in low circumstances"; "a miner in moderate circumstances"; "humble circumstances", "a farmer in good circumstances" etc., on all entries I transcribed until at least mid-1844. From 1845 onwards the ones I saw all had bach./wid./spin. entered for Condition.
I thought the vicar's interpretation of the required record was very helpful and wished they had all kept it up!
