I just might have solved it -- Donna’s MI has been very helpful.
Have you looked at a couple called Robert Cain (mariner) and Eleanor Crebbin who married in Arbory in 1856 ? They had their children in Peel in the 1850s and 1860s but several of the children died. In 1881 there’s a married Ellen Cain (b Arbory) without husband (away at sea ?) with her 9 yr old son John T Cain (b Peel). Ancestry has transcribed him as John J Cain but the middle initial is more like a T than a J. And there’s no baptism in the IGI for a JTC in 1871/2 to a Robert and Eleanor Cain.
I might be wrong ---- the 1881 household below might be a completely different family, but the combination of birthplaces and ages make me think that I could be right.
