I may have attached this to the wrong string, but all the other strings found in the message board do not permit direct replies [too old?]
Here is an excerpt from a message of 2007 [by Eric Gelling], referring to Phil Scarffe /Jane Hogg [md.1876 Lonan]: "....Children that I have are: William 1787, Ann 1789, Jane 1792, John 1794-1872 (buried Lonan age 78 of Ballig), Margaret 1796 and Thomas 1799-1867. The youngest, Thomas, married Jane GELLING, the sister of my 2xg grandfather William...."
I'm currently delving into the Scarffe family of Lonan, in particular the brothers of John 1765-1839, who is my direct ancestor via Thomas 1810-78.
John's brother Philip 1759-1841 [h/o Jane Hogg 1765-1834 - see above] seems to present a problem: There is a John Scarffe bptd 1794-05-01, s/o Philip Scarffe [Lonan Baptisms, mnb and IGI] but there is also an IGI entry for a John Scarffe s/o Phil Scarffe and Jane Hogg bptd 1809-06-25 Lonan. The John b.1794 probably married Jane Cojeen 1828 Lonan - Census returns appear [well, almost!] to support such a John Scarffe b.~mid-1790s - he died in 1872 aged 76y "of Ballig". His wife Jane died 1882 aged 92 of Ballamenaugh [virtually the same area of South Lonan]. Jane was probably b.1792 Lonan d/o John.
There were no other Philip Scarffes active in Lonan around this time, so I must presume both entries were for the same couple, but giving the same name to two children was very rare. Has anyone addressed this problem? I will look up the Lonan Baptisms asap to confirm the 1809 entry but it will be a few months hence. Is there a "missing" John Scarffe b.Lonan ~1793-5? Is there a missing death of a young John Scarffe s/o Phil/Jane Hogg?
