I know a bit about the Scarff's as I studied them a few years ago. John Radcliffe married Jane Scarf 21 Jan 1816 Andreas. They will be ancestors of Emma, so she'd be interested in this.
I had a lot of trouble figuring out which Jane Scarff this was because she had varying ages in the census's. There are also 3 Janes quite close together. In the end I decided she was the one bp 29 Aug 1790 Lonan d/o John Scarff & Ann Kelly. I recorded my reasoning, but it's convoluted and too confusing for this posting (I'll post it if you like).
This Jane was the eldest child of (perhaps) 10 of John Scarff & Ann Kelly, who probably married in the Lonan gap period of late 1789 to 1791 which are missing (see Manx Notebook Lonan marriages).
John Radcliffe bp 28 Jul 1789 Andreas s/o James Radcliffe & Ann Kneale (per Carol's note above). Buried 9 May 1863 Andreas.
Jane Scarffe bp 29 Aug 1790 Lonan d/o John Scarffe & Ann Kelly. Perhaps the one buried Andreas 27 Dec 1865 age 72.
John Scarffe bp 19 May 1765 Lonan s/o Philip Scarffe & Ann Callister (not 100% certain but I eliminated all others). Buried 3 Jun 1839 Lonan. Age listed as "80" which is high for this bapt.
Ann Kelly bp 5 Mar 1769 Lonan d/o James Kelly & Joney Fargher (md 2 Dec 1756 Lonan). I think she's the "Widow Scarff a pauper aged 80 years" buried Lonan 11 Aug 1848, as it matches 1841 census entry at "Reaby" [Rabey, nr Baljean] Lonan for a Ann Scarffe 70 Pauper with [dau] Elizabeth 35 and [g-dau] Isabella 8.
Philip Scarffe bp 29 Aug 1728 Lonan s/o John Scarffe & Margaret Quark and buried 30 May 1805 Lonan. He married Ann Callister 30 Jul 1755 Lonan. Ann bd 20 Mar 1816 Lonan. She was bp 8 Jun 1735 d/o John Callister & Margaret Clark (md 7 Jun 1716).
John Scarffe md Margaret Quark probably about 1716, which is just before the known Lonan registers begin. Their eldest son John b about 1717 is my ancestor. They were of Ballaskeroo Lonan. John Sr buried 22 Nov 1741 and Margaret 11 May 1760 Lonan. Margaret Quark is d/o Phinlo Quark (will 1716) & Jane Lewney (will 1713). She had sibs John (d 1743) and Jane (md Philip Corrin 1723 and d 1731) whose wills mention Scarff relatives.
John Scarffe was born about 1691 s/o William Scarffe & Margaret Christian. William was Margaret's middle husband of 3 (#1 James Killey bd 20 Feb 1689/90 & #3 Philip Callister were the others) and he died about Feb 1692/93. Wills are available to prove all of this.
I think a further ancestor will be a Philip Scarffe who inherited Ballaskerroo in 1680 and passed it to John Scarffe in 1700. John's father William had died soon after he was born and probably Wm's brother James Scarff would be his guardian. When James Skarff died 1719 he "left his coz Jo: Skarff house of Balla:Skarff".
A Donald Scarffe inherited Ballaskerroo in 1643 and passed it to Philip Scarffe in 1680. A further ancestor is a John MacSkerff and Ballascaroo was inherited by a Donald MacSkerff in 1530.
My theory is that all the later Manx people with surname Scarffe descend from William Scarff and his son John, because Uncle James had only one son and he had no children.
