A rackentree was a crane about four and a half feet high. Set in a heavy iron base, it stood on the hearth with the arm above the fire.
There were holes in the upright and in the arm to allow the height and length to be adjusted to the height of the fire and the width of the cooking pot, suspended from the arm by a pothook.
A jack was a circular piece of iron about 18 inches in diameter.
It was suspended over the fire by chains in the chimney flue.
Four hooks, set at 12. - 3. -6.& 9 O;clock, allowed pots to be heated over the fire or for fish & ham to be smoked
