My first thought about Alexander's origins was Scotland. Both Alexander and Hannay are names common in Scotland. Looking at Family Search there are a number of Alexander Hannays born around the right time. There also results for the north of England going towards Scotland. I would look for a coastal location for his birth/baptism.
