Hi Gerald.
What a surprise to get your email!
You have to my knowledge most of it correct.
My grandfather moved to Derry in 1916 and the family followed later. I don't know how much later but I would imagine not long
My father attended the Model School in Derry and then Glasgow Tech.
In 1947 he took employment on a French Railway in Sierra Leone. I think it was being constructed and was there 1947-48.
In 1948 in May we immigrated to Australia and he gained employment with the State Electricity Commission of Victoria. In that position he retired.
His brother Peter Brown Newell cleared out before he was 18 to join the Queens own Cameron Highlanders.
He returned to Derry in 1919 and completed his apprenticeship as a fitter at Craig's Foundry. After his apprenticeship finished he worked for the L&LSR. In 1923 he moved to Australia. He fought in both world wars.
I hope this answers all of your questions. However if I can be of further assistance please write.
You must understand that I was only 9 when I came to Australia but I asked my father to write what he knew before he passed away.
I rode the footplate on the steam engines rode in the Guards van. Can't remember actually being in a carriage.
Donegal was and still my spiritual home as I spent as much time as possible there.
Roy Newell

My parents are both now deceased
