Re: Howland/Curphey North Ramsey

Hello Nigel

I have checked a few more of my notes here and have several references over time to Bowring/Sandy Road, so your information is a great help in making sense of these.

In the 1881 census, Elizabeth Tuthill is listed as the owner of 42 Bowring Road, together with her sister Jane Corlett. Both these women were daughters of John Kneen (of Sandy Road, according to MI), brother of Daniel Kneen. Then there is the John Kneen who was a cousin to John and Daniel - he is described (on son Thomas' marriage cert) as "famer of Balleigh". As I mentioned preveiously, his son Thomas married Daniel's daughter Catherine (in 1880, late in life for both) and Thomas was described as a carpenter and farmer (or grocer) of 30 Bowring Road in the 1881 census. I haven't found any references, in my limited searches, to the intervening properties yet. I really have to bite the bullet and order some will films, but there are so many John Kneens that it's hard to know which one to start with!

Is Daniel and Isabella's cottage the smallest one in that row (slate roof, green door/gate, #38? - from Google Maps/Streetview).

Thanks!
