Eric. I was considering further your earlier comments in this thread and the 1851 census regarding the John Kermode, shoemaker, appearing on the same page as William Kermode. I too have the John Kermode, shoemaker married to Ann Cowley in 1845 (s/o John Kermode). This together with the fact that there is already a John Kermode, shoemaker, age 22 s/o William Kermode appearing immediately below in the census obviously rules him out as also a son.
I have a baptism for Margret Matilda (28 Apr 1847), d/o John Kermode and Ann Cowley, which would fit with the Margt M. Kermode age 4 with John and Ann (Cowley) Kermode in the 1851 census. What is interesting is that on the 8 May 1845 marriage for John and Ann it states that John Kermode and his father, (also) John Kermode were both farmers, not shoemakers. I guess its possible for folks to change occupations over a 5-6 year period or perhaps they were always partly shoemakers as well as land-owners/farmers. The fact that William & Isabella's sons seem to have adopted a wide range of occupations (mariner, shoemaker, stone mason) perhaps suggests this.
Perhaps down the road we can find a link between the John & Ann (Cowley) Kermode to the others.
